The common assumption among activists and documentary filmmakers—that if people know, they will act—is flawed. It’s a common assumption among activists and filmmakers that their work will build awareness, but we need to question the underlying assumption that knowledge automatically leads to action. The trajectory from exposure to action is not seamless. Media, in our already crowded media landscape, is not a transparent delivery system for testimony. A constellation of factors contributes to the efficacy of a testimony.
